Departing From Beijing - How Will You Manage it?

It’s getting warmer in Beijing which can mean loads of things: spring is in the air, summer holidays are near, but also it can also signal the ”expat leaving season”. Leaving season comes around the Beijing expat community every summer. As the city is filled with teachers, this is the best season to move on from one adventure to another. Unfortunately, moving home is considered one of the most stressful life events that can happen to a human.Moving home comes next to other stressful events like divorce and the death of a loved one.

Beijing is known for its tight international community where friends become like family, so when people move away, it’s not only stressful for the movers, but also for the expat friends that stay behind. I have been a Beijing expat for the last three years and have attended many leaving parties. Some parties where fun and light hearted and some not so much. Moving friends can bring up many feelings and concerns, especially when kids are involved, it can bring up some tricky feelings and it’s not always an easy navigation to the next home. How can we make it a bit easier for the movers and for the expats that stay behind?

Movers

Make a list:

Make sure to make several lists of things you need to do, want to do and some time to rest in between. You might want to see some dear friends and visit the great wall again. But you also need to pack and sell furniture.

Don’t waste your time:

It’s important to choose wisely who you want to see one last time and who is not worth your time, you can’t please everyone and it’s important to take care of your family and your own precious time first.

Mental Health:

Moving is a mayor life changing moment for the whole family especially if you are moving out of the country. Take care of your own mental health by talking to some mental healthcare professionals.

Collect:

Make sure to collect precious memories of your time in Beijing, for yourself as an adult and for your kids. Make a Beijing goodbye book where you can add drawings and pictures of your time in Beijing. This way, the family can revisit past moments in Beijing.

Stay Behinders

Help out:

Help the movers as much as you can, this means you can spend extra time with your friends and lift some of the burden.

Be Patient:

Be mindful of mover’s time as they have so much to do and it might not always be easy to commit to events last minute.

Collect:

Collect your memories just like the movers you can collect pictures and kids can draw their friends to make saying goodbye a bit less hard.

Goodbyes are never fun and it’s important to keep in mind that the world is quite small with the internet and speedy plane rides. So a goodbye might not be a farewell it’s a see you later in many occasions.
